Here is a Photoshop tutorial which I splashed together and I hope it will teach you how to make the best looking buttons for web design, which can then be transferred to software such as Dreamweaver.  I used Photoshop CS4 for this tutorial but I believe it should work with all versions of Photoshop.

THE END RESULT:

Let’s begin!
Open a new document approximately 500x500 in size. Select the Paint Bucket Tool (), or simply press G on your keyboard, and click on the background to fill it with colour. I used black but you may choose a colour of your preference. Next click on the Rounded Rectangle Tool (), or simply press U on your keyboard, and make a rectangular shape as shown below.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. We need to edit two sections;  Inner Glow and Gradient Overlay.  Use the following settings:

Inner glow:

(Light Blue Colour Code: #00eaff)
Gradient Overlay:

(Dark Blue Colour Code: #115986)
(Light Blue Colour Code: #00d2ff)

If you used my settings, you should end up with something like this:

Go to Layer > Rasterize > Shape. If you don't do this then you cannot edit the shape of the shape… If that makes sense then. It has to be done if u want your button to look somewhat different and not just a blob.

Next, select the Elliptical Marquee Tool () and zoom into the left side of the button and create a small circle. About this size:

When you take your hand of the click, it should look a little less like a circle and more like a cross of about 5 pixels, depending on the size of the circle.. If your button is larger, then your circle will be larger too. Like this:

Press Delete on your keyboard. Now move the selected area down slowly with your mouse or by pressing the down arrow on your keyboard and keep pressing the Delete button when you want to create another hole. I created five holes in the shape and it looks like this:

Create a new layer. Click on Layer > New > Layer and press OK. Now, with the Elliptical Marque Tool still selected, create a circle that looks somewhat like this:

Select the Gradient Tool and make sure to set the style as Foreground to Transparent.

Now click on the left of the button and hold. Drag the mouse to the other side of the button (not all the way) and let go.

You should end up with this:

Deselect by click CTRL+D and adjust the layer opacity to your preference.

We are nearly done. All you need to do now is add your text!

Copy the button and add tex to each button and it should look a little something like this:

DONE. It was THAT simple! I hope you enjoyed my first Photoshop tutorial, I will soon post an article teaching you how to use these buttons in Dreamweaver and your own website! Watch out for more Adobe Photoshop tutorials, Tips and Tricks from The Wise Penguin!

WisePenguin,

According to Oxford University Students, there will be an exploding start visible with a pair of binoculars in the skies above the United Kingdom. The Supernova, named PTF11kly, will be visibile within a fortnight and has been triggered by the break up of a star 21 million light years away.

(source: universetoday.com)

What has actually happened is known as a rare "type 1a" supernova. This is where a star explodes and then sucks up the energy from other closeby star/s and is then reborn. The event occurred in the Pinwheel Galaxy which is located in the Great Bear constellation. Scientists are particularly interested in these events since type 1a supernovae can be used to measure the age and size of the universe (although, exTREMEly difficult to calculate).

The last time a supernova of this type occurred so close was in 1972. Before that you have to go back and look at 1937, 1898 and 1572. As you can see, this is a once in a lifetime event! If you are lucky enough to spot it within about 10 days or so, you can tell people you saw something that was 21 million light years away. They'd probably think you've gone crazy. But hey, me and you know its true. Show them the evidence! What you could do is maybe record it if you can get your hands on a good camera that has a good zoom funtion.

Right, after the explosion, the supernova is expected to burn with the brightness of more than a billion of our Suns for the first three weeks. However, experts state that despite the immense brightness of the star it would still be difficult for the general public to view it in the night sky. Especially those who have ne experience in this field because they will probably not even know where to look since they don't know where the Pinwheel Galaxy is! If you have a telescope, though, and you know where to look.. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity of seeing a star being born!

Just like any other electrical device such as a cell phone, iPhone, or iPod, the battery of an iPad will last a shorter time during heavy use. This article is here to help you make most of your iPad by increasing its battery life.

1. Reduce the brightness of the iPad screen. Obviously, the brighter your screen is the more battery it consumes! Reduce the brightness to a level that isn't too bright or too dark - just about right. This can be done by going to "Settings" and then "Brightness & Wallpaper". Now, drag the slider to the left in order to lower the screen brighness. I suggest 20-35 percent brightness should be sufficient for daytime use.

2. Turn the Wi-Fi and cellular data settings OFF. Your iPad battery drains quite drastically when the Wi-Fi is switched on. Therefore, if you are not planning on using Safari/internet or apps that require an internet connection then turn them off.

3. Turn off the sound effects. Sounds can cause your iPad battery to drain quickly if they are used frequently. Because they are activated by default, they sound whenever notifcations are received or when pressing buttons for the on-screen keyboard. What you need to do to turn off the sound effects in order to make your iPad bettery last longer is to go to "Settings" > "General" > "Sounds". The equalizer has five different options to "Increase/Decrease". You may also switch to "On/Off" if that is what you prefer. By disabling the lot, obviously, you will decrease battery usage by sounds.

4. Use it less often! This may sound a bit obvious, but, it is a valid point to make. Some of you out there are on your iPad 24/7 listening to music and watching videos... This will not help your battery. The more you use it, the more battery will be consumed. Therefore, if you try to cut the time you spend on your iPad by, maybe, 15-20 percent then your iPad battery will last longer.

More to come... How To Make iPad Battery Last Longer Part 2 will be up ASAP!

Meet MABEL - the Running Robot. She is able to run an astonishing 6.8mph - which is a world record for a two-legged machine. Built in 2008, MABEL has been 'training' for the last few years. She was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Check out the video:

If you find this video... well... Disturbing.. like myself... don't worry, you are not on your own. One Youtube user quipped that it is an 'early Skynet video', referring to the computer system, in the Terminator movies, controlling robots to terrorise the human race in the future. And he has a point. Running robots today, what tomorrow?

The Bugatti Veyron. No other car even comes close. The Bugatti Veyron is not only a looker, but also the fastest road-legal car in the whole world - with a top speed of 267.85 mph (431.07 km/h)

(credit: supercars.org)
(credit:www.bugattiveyron.com.au)
Being able to reach 60mph in a staggering 2.46 seconds, the Bugatti Veyron is a dream. The BBC television show 'Top Gear' named the Bugatti Veyron "Car of the Decade (2000–2009)". I'm not surprised! From 2005 to 2010 a total of 291 Veyrons had been sold... Doesn't sound like much. But with a base price tag of $1,700,000 no wonder only 291 had been sold in 5 years!

If you ask most people how high the world population is, you are likely to be answered by the two following: "I don't know" or "6 billion". If you are answered with the former, then you know the person has probably dropped out of school. If you are answered with the latter, then you know the person has heard or read it correctly, but it needs to be updated.

According to statistics, the world population will hit the 7 billion mark by the end of 2011. 7 BILLION! That is insane when you take into account that in 1800 the world population was only 1 billion. I found this interesting video by the NationalGeographic which teaches and informs people about the 7 billion... Sit back, enjoy and be amazed.

You've gotta admit - that was very interesting. I would never have thought that 7 billion people could fit in Lost Angeles. But why the heck would we stand shoulder to shoulder. Thigns could get worse if estimates turn out to be correct: there could be 15.8 billion people roaming around the earth by the end of 2100.

Search-engine giant Google has announced it will buy mobile phone manufacturer Motorola for £7.7bn ($12.5). This could allow Google to be more competitive in the Smartphone market and steal some of it's rivals' share - watch out Apple.

Apple is the biggest smartphone producer in the world, accounting for 18.5% of all handsets shipped. However, Android - which is the OS designed by Google - is the most widely used operating system used in smartphones.

By acquiring Motorola Google will now have access to Motorola's 17,000 patents and 7,500 pending patents. I think this may have been the real reason Google actually bought Motorola - to defend the producers using its Android OS against legal battles over infringement issues.

We may see an all out patent war between the superpowers Apple, Google and Microsoft. The companies have been sueing each other non-stop over infringements and Google buying an extra 17,000 patents will boost it's power in the market. We shall wait and see...

If you don't know what i'm talking about then just watch this....

That looks pretty cool, i just hope our generation is still on this planet when that comes out. IF... that comes out. Some of the functions seen in the video look impossible... !

Even if this finally comes out, i don't think it will be any cheaper than... oh, i don't know... let's say
£20,000? But as you can see from the video it will probably be worth the money :)

The manufacturer believes that some of the device's imagined features could appear in high-end devices by 2015. However, i really do doubt that we humans can make something as complex as that... It seems impossible... Doesn't it? The amount of technology that has to go in one of those... I'm not so sure.

Is your computer not running at the same speed that it used to run when you first had it? It's probably way slower now that when you first used it and it takes a while to start which tests your patience. There are a lot of reasons for this to occur, so lets try fixing some of these up on your slow computer. Here are 10 tips and tricks to make your computer faster:

Slow Start Up
There can be a number of reasons to Windows loading very slowly when starting up. What you want to do is to go to Run, type "msconfig" and hit enter. A new window should appear and under the ‘Start Up’ tab, you need to uncheck the unwanted programs and press OK. Once you've rebooted Windows you should notice things will run a bit smoother.
Oh yeah, another program I thought will be very useful to speed up your computer is StartUp Delayer which will help in setting after how much time programs should be loaded after Windows boots. For example, you could set your instant messenger program to load 50 seconds after Windows starts up so that not all the programs try to start at the same time.

Slow Loading Start Menu
If the Start Menu items are loading slowly, which it normally is when everything else it slow, you can open the Registry Editor by typing in the Run menu ‘regedit.exe’ and pressing Enter. Next, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Find "MenuShowDelay", and double click to edit the value. The lower the number specified, the faster the Start Menu will load - the faster your computer will perform.

Slow Right Click Context Menu
Your Right Click menu on your computer is probably loading slow because too many programs have added unwanted entries there. What you need to do is just download this program called Mmm, install it and then modify your context menu to remove unwanted items which will speed it up.

Slow Send To Menu
When the Send To menu loads slowly, you can type ’sendto’ in the Run Dialog, and remove any unwanted items in the Explorer Window that appears. This should add some speed to it and speed up your computer.

Slow loading My Computer Window
If the My Computer Window loads slowly, in the Explorer Window, go to Tools > Folder Options > View. A new window should appear and you want to uncheck ‘Automatically search for network folders and printers” This should speed it up.

Slow loading Add or Remove Programs Applet
This really is one of the most ANNOYING piece of programs present in Windows, it takes ages to load when you have a considerable number of programs installed on your computer. You can either use the all-in-one CCleaner for this purpose, or get MyUninstaller that comes as a speedy replacement for Add or Remove Programs. If you download any of those two programs, you won't really need to go to Add or Remove Programs as it can all be done with CCleaner and MyUninstaller. This should speed up the process.

Slow Defragmentation
The Windows Defragmenter can’t get any slower, can it? You want to have an alternative to the Windows Defragmenter, and Defraggler is just one of the best ones available in the market. It’s free, and works like a charm which can speed up defragmentation manifold.

Slow Ending of Unresponsive Programs
If you’ve clicked on ‘End Task’ if any program is running unresponsive, you might have noticed that the program is not shut down straightaway, rather it takes time. You can change this by going to Run > regedit.exe > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ and change this value to 1000 which means it will shut it down faster, thus speeding your computer up.

Disable Animations and Appearance Overhauls to maximize performance
If you don't really mind that your Windows isn't very eye catching then this is great for you. Go to System Properties in the Control Panel. Click on ‘Advanced’, then ‘Performance’ and click ‘Adjust for best performance’. This will boost your PC’s performance up a bit - depending on your current settings of course.

Tips:
- Don’t keep installing software. Install a program only if it really serves you a purpose.
- Keep as less programs as possible running on the System Tray. This essentially means reducing the number of programs that start during Windows start up.
- If your computer boots slow, i suggest using Bootvis to speed it up.

Those were 10 tips and tricks to make your computer faster, good luck.

WisePenguin,

Just when you think the impossible will never happen, it has! You dropped your phone in water! If you think all hope is lost when it comes to saving your wet mobile phone, you are wrong. Before you panic, try these steps - they can get your phone working again.

1. Before even thinking of doing anything else, take your phone out the water and REMOVE THE BATTERY AND SIM CARD IMMEDIATELY! Time is off the essence when it comes to saving your wet cell phone and every second counts - so remove them quickly! Do not turn turn your phone on just to "check if it still works". This just wastes time! You must dry the battery off as much as possible with paper towels and cotton swabs. Next you should wrap the battery in dry paper towels and set it aside. While you won't save all of your information on your SIM card, you won't lose all of it if taken out on time.

2. Dry the phone. You can use paper towels, cotton swabs etc. You must be thorough. Go inside the battery case, between the buttons, and inside any connectors going into the phone that's just been dropped in water. Shake the phone, some more water might appear which you might not have noticed before. Keep drying it and when no more water appears when you shake the phone, set your cell phone aside.

3. Use compressed air or a blow dryer to blow air into the keypad, battery case, and the ports. If your using a blow-dryer, do not forget to hold it away from the phone as the phone will get damaged or melted by the extremely hot air.

4. Once you have dried the phone as much as you can, put your cell phone into a bowl. Pour uncooked rice over the cell phone and make sure you completely cover it with rice. Leave the phone aside for a day. You might think this is stupid, but the rice will act as a dessicant and suck any left over moisture from your cell phone that's been dropped in water.

5. After you've left the cell phone aside in the rice, the phone should be very dry. Reinsert the battery and turn the phone on. There is a good chance your phone might turn on and work if you followed these steps as soon as your phone was submerged from water. Chances of your cell phone working again improve if you haven't tried to turn the phone on while it was wet, and you dry it as soon as you took it out.

That is how to save a wet cell phone, if this didn't work for you, there is nothing more you can do to save your cell phone. Its dead. R.I.P

Good luck.

The Iphone is a fairly easy-to-use device so odds are that you haven't even looked at the manual yet. But there are a number of small features that might be of interest to you. Here they are.

1. Scroll to Top

By tapping the status bar (bar at the top with the clock) you will scroll to the top of the content, IF the content is scrollable. This feature can come very handy when you have scrolled down a long web page and want to get back to the top but you are too lazy to scroll back up. Just tap the damn bar :p

2. Calculator Scientific Mode

This is the most complicated method of all time, probably. What you do first is open you calculator app. Hold your Iphone in landscape mode (90°). There is you scientific calculator :)

3. Screenshots

Press the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time and your Iphone will take a screenshot of your current screen. A camera shutter sound will be heard, the screen will flash white, and the screenshot will save in the "Saved Photos" library in the Photos app.

4. Fast Forward/Rewind Music and Video

Press + Hold the skip forward/back arrows to fast forward or rewind instead of skipping tracks. Also, you can press on the album art to manually Fast Forward or Rewind.

More to come...

WisePenguin,

The online marketing business is rapidly growing and everyone wants a part of it. I'm going to show you how you can make money online in the easiest way. You must be thinking that's impossible but is simply isn't. If you are a beginner then I'm pretty sure you have lots of questions;

Do I need a website?
How DO I make money online?
How much will a website cost me?
How do I get traffic to my website?
What do I put on my website?
What is a niche market?
When will i get my money?
What will I need to sell?
How do I sell stuff?
What is Adsense?

etc... etc.. etc...

As you can notice, I haven't got any advertisement on my blog. The reason for this is because I haven't made this blog to earn money. I made it for fun, to pass time, and to help other people. I might put a few ads on later in the future, then again I might not. I have no intentions currently, anyhow.

You see, the problem lies here. Most of you want to know how to make money online and the online marketers will gladly tell you - IF you purchase their products. And their methods will make you money - but probably not even $1 per day. By the time you have earned back the money that you spent on buying their products in the first place, you'll be so tired and frustrated you simply want to quit. That's exactly what they want you to do! They don't really care much about you, they just care about 3 things;

1. Money
2. More money
3. Even more money

I say, what nice people! Now, I'm not saying that everyone out there who offers to show you how to make money online is out for your money. Nope, there are people out there that honestly want people to succeed and are willing to share with you what that they know. Maybe there aren't a lot of people like that out there, but they definitely are there.

I'm sure we've pictures on the internet of people holding Adsense checks of hundreds of dollars. What they don't tell you is that the amount of money on their check is not profit. It's earnings. If someone makes $700 from Adsense then they will also have spent a few hundred dollars on it. One way they do this is by creating Link Farms. I'm not going to talk deep on this topic right now but I'll tell you what they are. Link farms are a network of blogs that are created to create more traffic and revenue to one main site. A blogger will have one main blog and then create a lot of other blogs linking to the main blog and this will increase page rank in search engines, traffic and ultimately revenue. I shall explain link farms a little more detailed in future posts as it's nothing to worry about right now.

Note: Using link farms is against Google's TOS and you will get banned if they find out you are using them.

Before you start spending money on useless stuff, let's start with the basics of making money online. The most important thing to start off, is you need to forget about websites, forget adwords, forget about selling things, forget about traffic, forget about EVERYTHING. Well, almost everything.

Let's start with Google's "Blogger/Blogspot" and "Adsense".

This really is the fastest and cheapest way to making money online. Creating a Blogger blog is free so it's very handy for beginners who are not sure what to spend their money on. Google Adsense is FREE. Google will provide you with free advertisements on your blog from which you will earn money every time someone clicks a advert on your website. So what's the catch, you might be thinking. Well, I haven't found a "catch" so far and i doubt anyone else has. Except, by using the free blogger you don't own the blog but if you pay for your blog you can have much more control over it. I don't suggest buying a blog for beginners, so stick to using the free one to make money online.

Blogs are very simple to manage. Very simple. You will learn all the basics and won't need to invest tons of money and not get much in return.

The Wise Penguin has covered some of the basics and shall leave it at this, for now. Make Money Online Part 2 will be up soon and I'm going to show you step-by-step how to set up a blog and make money from it.

DM,

A lot of people depend on their mobile phones in every aspect of their lives, from talking to family and friends to business, from emailing and texting to playing games. When someone is so reliant on their mobile phone for almost everything they do, it will be quite aggravating when their mobile phone's battery dies at the time they need their phone, not to mention in an emergency. I will tell you a few tips and tricks to extend your mobile phone battery's life and make it last longer.

1. The easiest and most effective way to preserve your mobile phone's charge is to switch your phone off when not in use. When you're going to bed, or going to work and are not planning on answering your mobile phone, just switch it off.

2. Try not to put up wallpapers. They might be nice and cool to look at - but you won't be saying that when you need your phone and you can't switch it on because the battery is drained. Wallpapers use a lot of energy and power so by not using them it will increase battery life. Why not just put a nice picture up instead?

3. Turn off your Bluetooth when you're not using it. Bluetooth uses up a LOT of your battery life so if you aren't using it just switch it off. Or, switch to a regular corded headset, because they use less power. Also, leaving your Bluetooth on when not using it allows hackers to just hack into your phone, which you don't really want.

4. Only use your ringer OR the vibrate function for calls, but avoid using them both at the same time. A lot of battery power can be lost by using the vibrate function alone, so using both can put an overwhelming drain on your battery.

5. Turn down the brightness of your screen. The screen sucks a tremendous amount of power from your battery, just like the screens on laptops. Visit your phone's settings menu to find the screen controls and lower the brightness to increase battery life.

6. Try not to play games, scroll through pictures or watch videos too often, as these functions use a lot of power. This is especially important when you know you'll have to wait a long while to charge your phone.

7. Charge your mobile phone less often as charging when you don't need to (say, when the battery is at 50%) will reduce the battery's capacity. On average, cell phone charge lasts about 3 days so it is unnecessary to charge more often than about 3 days, depending on your phone of course.

8. Try to avoid playing music without earphones. When you listen to music make sure you are listening through earphones and not just through the phone. Playing music without earphones will decrease battery life faster than when you listen music with earphones as your phone uses more energy and power to play the music without earphones.

And there you have it, a few tips and tricks from The Wise Penguin that will increase your mobile phones battery life.

WisePenguin,

OK, so now i will show you a quick and easy way to hide folders in Windows XP. But this method of hiding folders in XP is quite rudimentary, so if someone knows quite a bit about computers and how to use them then it can be easy for them to find the hidden folder. However, its a great way to hide folders from people who are too busy with other things or your parents who probably only know how to check their email ;)

First, if you want to hide a folder, its better if you dont create it in obvious places such as My Documents but rather in a place where people would normally not look. But setting a folder to Hidden doesnt mean it will be necessarily hidden. There is an option in Explorer called “Show hidden files and folders” which can display the hidden folders - if they were hidden using this method.

In order to disable this option you need to do the following.

Go to My Computer > Folder Options.

Afterwards, click on the View tab and under the Hidden files and folders section, you must choose the button that says "Do not show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

Now, locate the folder you want to hide and right click it and choose Properties.

On the General tab you should check the box in the Attributes section called Hidden. Again, click OK.

The folder now should not be visible to the naked eye :)

If you want to un-hide it then all you need to do is in Folder Options click on the View Tab and under Hidden files and folders you should choose the button named "Show hidden files and folders."

There are also some other ways to hide folders and I'll be explaining them later on,

Happy hiding :)

WisePenguin,

If you want to make sure nobody snoops around and sees what you have been upto on the internet, then read on. Deleting the browsing history can be very useful, especially for those people using shared computers. The following instructions will erase the history of any browser in Windows.

1. Click Start on the Desktop
2. Go to Settings
3. Click on Control Panel
4. Open up Internet Options
5. Ensure the General tab is selected
6. Click Clear History (or Delete) in the history box
7. Click on OK when asked whether or not to delete all files in the history folder
8. At the bottom of the General box click OK to exit

That is it! Simple.

WisePenguin,

We've all been through this situation. "How do i increase my SMS messages storage space and how do i password protect my text messages?"

If that's you, and you don't want to delete your precious texts, my friend, welcome to the club.

Before i start: I think this method only works for phones that can be connected to MyPhoneExplorer! But i might be wrong!

I am going to show you how to have unlimited SMS storage space on your mobile and how to password protect your text messages. First of all you need to download a software called MyPhoneExplorer. The software is only a few MB and can be found here:

DOWNLOAD

Just install the software and open it. Now, follow these steps:

1. Connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable

2. In MyPhoneExplorer click on: File, Connect F1. This will open up all of your mobiles information onto the software.

3. Click on Messages > Inbox.

4. Highlight all the messages you want to save.

5. Right click and select Export/Import > save as website on memory stick.

6. A box will pop up and just click OK or rename the file. Thats it, DONE!

All the SMS messages will be saved as a webpage on your mobile. To access the SMS messages just go on your phone and go to the Webpage folder. There you will find the file where all of you text messages are stored.

With this method you can save as many SMS's as you want depending on the size of your phones memory or memory card. Now each SMS that is saved will take around 0.5KB of space. I saved 8 SMS's and it only took 4KB of space. So for example, if you have a 1GB memory card, that would be about 2.000.000 SMS that you can store!

After following this method you can also password protect your text messages. Just download an application that can lock files and use it to lock the SMS web page. There are tons of applications that can do this and you can find very useful ones at:

http://www.getjar.com/software/Sony-Ericsson/K750i/Search/password

I used this one: http://www.getjar.com/products/5964/FileLock

That is the method I used to increase my SMS storage space and how I password protected my text messages.

WisePenguin,

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "Microsoft"? Word? Windows? XP? Vista? Computer? Office

What about Tables?

Microsoft have been making windows for years but recently they have started to make tables too. Windows and tables. (Can't wait for the chairs... haha.. yeah, forget it.)

Right, Microsoft have designed a computer table called Microsoft Surface.

I wouldn't mind one of those... One day.

Microsoft Surface (codename Milan) is a surface computing platform that responds to natural hand gestures and real world objects.

(Pic Credit: amitbhawani)
Surface has been optimized to respond to 52 touches at a time. That is a lot of fingers. Surface has a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like form factor, its 22 inches (56 cm) high, and 42 inches (107 cm) wide, and 21 inches (53 cm) deep. A custom version of Windows Vista is used to run the software platform and has wired Ethernet 10/100, wireless 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.
Prices start at $7,600 (USD). While that may seem like a lot, the previous generation Surface started at $11,000, so the prices have definitely gone down since the first Microsoft Surface

Let's wait and see if this table catches on.
